My name is Sam Hancock, and I live in South Australia. My Great Great Grandfather, John Hancock was  born in Swanage, Dorset, England in about 1813. About 6 years before he came to Australia, he  married Sarah Hodgkinson in December 1832. Their first child, Hannah, was born in 1834 at Stratford  on Avon, Warwickshire. (Yes it is the Shakespeare place!) Emma was born in 1837, the same year they  left Portsmouth on the ship Eden, bound for South Australia. They arrived at Port Adelaide in June  1838.

John's brother, William, also came to South Australia, arriving on the Cleveland in December 1839,  settling as a farmer near Tea Tree Gully. Hancock Road is named after him.

John & Sarah had 7 more children. Their eldest boy, wait for it......, John, was born at Islington,  near Adelaide, in September 1841. He is my Great Grandfather.

In November 1859, he married Emma Baker at St Georges Anglican in Gawler. John and Emma lived in  Broken Hill, New South Wales, and Burra, South Australia, where Emma died aged 32, while John was  away carting from Burra to Broken Hill. 
 After Emma died their 5 boys were brought up by Arthur and Mary Ann Pratt (Emma's sister) in Two  Wells, South Australia. The one girl they had was brought up by William (John's Uncle) and  Elizabeth Hancock at Tea Tree Gully.

Emma's parents came to South Australia on board the Ramillies, arriving here on 25 March 1849 and  have a headstone in the Zoar Bible Christian Chapel(Reformed/Primitive Methodist)Cemetery in Argent  Road, Penfield, South Australia.

The Hancock's and their associated families were mainly farmers on the Adelaide  Plains around Two Wells, Mallala, Balaklava, Gawler, Penfield and Port Gawler.

I have also included results of research for my wife, Evelyn Nixon's Forebears as  well as our extended family.

Inevitably I have found plenty of information about wider family connections and  these results are included too.
